And now my computer shows "dowloading updates 79% complete" and a little MS icon on my toolbar. I didn't authorize that. What updates?

I may be the Windows update thingy. I think that it now defaults to automatic updating without asking you. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ - exactly what happens varies with your version of windows, but if it says there are no critical updates required, you're probably getting them automatically.

Yep. They redid the whole "windows update" thing.

They now have your credit card number, the names of your dogs and cats, and the number of times you stuck your chewing gum under your desk.
