I'm a bit disappointed about the some things we didn't get to do. We didn't take a boat tour. We didn't see any whales or sea turtles. We didn't see the National Tropical Botanical Gardens. I didn't see the Alakai Swamp. Didn't see Pearl Harbor. Probably a few other things I'm forgetting just now.

I'm getting nervous about my pictures from my new camera. First of all, they all turned out underexposed. I had a polarizer on it, but the camera checks exposure through the lens, so it should compensate. It had a lot of trouble focusing in dim light, which I blame on the polarizer. I'm pretty sure I only used it on my telephoto lens, and but all my shots seem to be bad. I don't recall having any trouble with the handful of pics I took before the trip.

The second problem is that I can't yet view the pics I took in RAW. My friend gave me a link to the Adobe site for free downloads, but I first have to upgrade Photoshop. So I've got a couple hundred pics I won't even be able to see for a couple of days.

It's frustrating because these pictures are my memories. I remember the last day pretty well (so far), but anything earlier in the week, I need the pics. The underexposed pics are not going to be great pictures. They'll be fine for showing people what we saw, but I intended to come away with a few spectacular shots.

Thanks for the tip. I was able to get my hands on the proper Photoshop. And my camera came with some RAW software as well.

Oh no! I'm sure that you can work with the shots and make them spectacular! Don't worry!

Think of what you missed as a great incentive to return! We have been to Hawai'i twice now... once on Kaua'i (my favorite so far), once on Mau'i (fun then, crowded now), and once on Oahu (disliked the big city, touristy). We have not NEARLY seen all we wanted. We WILL go back.

I also recommend that you spend AT LEAST two weeks at a time. The plane trip takes some recovery and after two weeks you are really, really relaxed! :-)

I would love to go to those gardens, go on a helicopter trip, see the live volcanos... and lots more... *sigh*

Pearl Harbor was worth the trip. It was about the only thing I really liked about Oahu... about.

Oh yeah, the volcanoes. I was disappointed about that, but I knew that going in. Another thing I was disappointed about was finding out after we got there, that American has direct flights to Kauai. We wouldn't have had to spend that night or afternoon in Honolulu. That was a whole 'nother day.

We'll definitely go back. But I don't know when we'll be able to afford it again.

The more direct flights are really nice but so LONG! We had one stopover going, in LA. Coming home it was almost direct but from Honolulu. I forget what airline we took! Robert was grateful for the stopovers because his legs/knees really hurt if he can't move around a lot. (He's, unfortunately, also a smoker)

Save up! Maybe set up a special savings fund? You know now that it's worth it. :-)

I think I would like to go to the big island too, and maybe the garden island. My uncle loved Moloka'i, but it's the most undeveloped I think. He enjoyed seeing the former Leper Colony. We met a woman at our shoe store who was actually born in Moloka'i. She told us that it was pretty but she could not wait to leave!

Oh and... for seeing the whales you need to go to Mau'i around spring break time! That's when they are there and have the little ones. We saw whales on our first trip and I would not have given that up for anything! We watched them swim by while we ate our breakfast! That was absolutely awesome.

I'm not sure that we have seen any sea turtles yet... but christinA and Sean did.

The whales are off the north coast of Kaua'i in the winter time, which is why I am so diappointed about missing them - they're right there. But the seas were rough, and there were no boat tours running. And we hadn't made reservations anyway. We were up at Kilauea Lighthouse once, but there were none showing then.

I'm not sure there is a good place to see turtles on Kauai. Not unless you're snorkeling.

Aw... I see. Well I'm sorry that you missed them. Rough seas? Were there storms somewhere close?

The Humpbacks and their young are very visible in the bay in Mau'i around late March and April I believe. Mau'i is also known for it's Sea Turtles. That's their symbol. I'm sure that you are right about the snorkeling being the best way to see them.

On our boat tour off of Kaua'i (in June) I think we only saw flying fish... but that was fun!

Flying fish would be pretty cool to see too!

They swam/flew pretty much with the boat for quite a way. We all got a big kick out of seeing them! I think our captain pointed out turtles, at least Robert says so, but I never saw them. I'm not very good at sighting things... :-(

didn't your camera come with software to process raw images?

with photoshop's raw plugin and most raw processors, you can adjust the exposure. it is one thing i do very often with my stuff.

d'oh!

Dammit! You told me that before too. I didn't have a chance to check before we left, and my mind was pretty well emptied by the time we got back. Now where is that disc...

Okay, the editor that came with it is not all that great. But I can view them all, and a lot of them look really good.

if by not that great you mean limited options, mine is that way as well, only three or four adjustments available. the photoshop plugin has only one additional one. after the basic raw processing, you need to save as a tiff or jpeg to do further tweaking. the nice thing is that the basic adjustments while it is still raw don't result in any information loss whatever.

We can rarely do everything we'd like to do on such trips. Even a trip to a place like Disneyland requires that choices be made so, Hawaii, even moreso! You'll go back one day and have something to look forward to. :)

Sorry about the pictures. You'll have to Photoshop 'em for yourself. What's that program now "Action"? Hmmm.

A few of the things were disappointing because they were so close. Like, we had three hours in Honolulu to see the Polynesian Cultural Center, but we were tired, and weren't sure we wanted so spend the cab fare, and lug our carry-on bags there.

I'd feel better about going back if I thought we could see it all then. ;-)
